Product Description
The first lab is a fun look at magnetic fields using vegetable oil, iron filings and a magnet. The oil and filings are mixed together in a petri dish and when a magnet is brought near the bottom of the dish “magnetized cones” rise up off the surface. Next, sand and iron filings are mixed together and then separated using a magnet in a baggie. Just Plain Nuts take advantage of induced magnetism and magnetic fields to create the illusion of a “tower of hex nuts” precariously balanced on a salsa cup. Lodestone introduces the idea of natural magnetism and then, building on that idea, build your own compass and investigate the Earth’s natural magnetic field. The final lab gives you an opportunity to build a magnetic field detector and use iron filings to “see” magnetic fields surrounding magnets. 6 activities in each kit.
