Orthoceras in Rough, Polished

Small, straight shell imported from Morocco. The shell is a cast of the original animal that has been preserved in the sediments of the Atlas Mountains. The fossil is polished and looks like a tapered hot dog that has been sectioned. Each section represents a season of growth, like the ring of a tree or fish scales. These were the great, great, granddaddy to the modern squid.
