Gypsum is an evaporite mineral, formed when water evaporates and leaves behind a layer of dissolved minerals. Beds of gypsum are present almost everywhere halite is present, and it is generally believed to have been deposited as a result of bays which had restricted circulation from the ocean and high evaporation rates.
