Granite, Pink

Product Description

LL Demos & Labs: Rock Profile: Granite

Granite is an intrusive igneous rock from central Colorado, near the Royal Gorge area. It is pink, gray, white, and silver in color with large, beautiful crystals. Granite often forms in mountainous areas that are produced by the collision of tectonic plates. The magma, formed from partially melted rocks, rises and cools, and the minerals start to crystallize. Different minerals have different melting and “freezing” temperatures. Granite is composed of minerals that melt first and “freeze” last. These are quartz and alkali feldspar. As the hot magma rises toward the surface, it cools slowly, giving the minerals in the magma time to find one another and form crystals that become quite large.
