LL Demos & Labs: Rock Profile: Gabbro

Gabbro is a dark grained, crystalline specimen from Oregon that is the most common form of magma. This magma, formed from partially melted rocks, rises and cools and the minerals start to crystallize. Different minerals have different melting and “freezing” temperatures. Gabbro is composed of minerals that melt last and “freeze” first. As the hot magma rises toward the surface, it cools slowly, giving the minerals in the magma time to find one another and form crystals that become quite large. The main difference between gabbro and quartz monzonite and granite is that gabbro has more of the darker minerals.
